Synopsis

19-year-old Maki’la has lived on the streets since the age of 13. She marries the kaid Mbingazor, who shows her how to survive: drugs, prostitution, thieving. The Maki’la-Mbingazor couple are respected in the street but their exploitative, violent relationship starts to bother Maki’la. She feels like a prisoner and decides to leave him.

Macherie Ekwa Bahongo, born in 1993 in Kisangani, DRC, participated in script and production workshops while studying law. In 2016, she wrote six episodes of the TV series Nakisa: Lobi mokola ya sika. In 2018 she wrote and directed Maki’la, her first fiction film, about the children of the streets, which was selected for the Forum section of the 2018 Berlinale, enjoying its world first.
