  • M. Mustapha HASNAOUI (Tunisie)

Director
Award-winning director Mustapha hasnaoui’s preferred medium is documentary film focusing on social issues and family histories. he also has a special interest in making films about the life of musical composers with a cause such as Max Deutsh, a Rebel pedagogue (2006) and Essayad, musicien (1994). The form of documentary he favors captures the real world in such a way that both the viewer and characters are physically and emotionally engaged, oblivious of the presence of a fixed camera which allows the characters to move naturally without feeling they are being watched. This process involves an unhurried pace of direction so that events unfold naturally, giving the viewer a feel for the essence of the film. The absence of a narrator heightens the emotional dimension, a departure from conventional documentary formats. Hasnaoui’s documentary credits include Margaret Garner (2006), based on an opera written by Tony Morrison which covers racial segregation in the United States. Most of his works have been produced by arte and featured at various international film festivals. His last movie, Zelal, codirected with Marianne Khoury was in competition in La Mostra De Venise 2010.
