After several years of absence during which historical events made art a difficult endeavor, Algeria is once
again on the front line of African and Arab cinema. It is not only the number of films produced (although this is
a remarkable feat in comparison to other countries of the region) which draws our attention but the capacity to
engender diversity, source of wealth and renewal, which we wish to pay tribute to: different views of Algeria
and various cinematic approaches exploring innovative filmic representation.
This close-up on Algerian films
is not limited to this single section but includes all the Algerian movies scheduled in the festival.
We have
chosen to highlight powerful, original works displaying the renewed vitality of Algerian cinema. Films by
Tarak Téguia, Amor Hakkar, Fatma Zohra Zamoum, Lyés Salem and also those of the documentarist Malek Ben
Smail, represent many cinematic proposals mingling historical narrative to a reflection on art.
