Born in Algiers in 1973, Lyes Salem is an actor, writer and Algerian director.
He studiedin Paris at the Lycée Molière and at La Sorbonne, before continuing his training at the Ecole du Théâtre National de Chaillot and CNSAD.
After three successful short films, L'Hasa (1999), Jean-Fares (2001): Best Short Film Award at the Milan Festival of African Cinema in 2002, and Young audience award in Montpellier, Cousines (2003): Cesar for the Best short film, he directed his first feature film in 2008 Mascarades followed by L'Oranais in 2014.

He first played in the theater before turning to film where he played in several films including "Lumumba" where he played the role of the great African leadeur Patrice Lumumba.
